The Nation Nigeria
Nigeria, situated in the West African region, is the most populous black African country with a population of over one hundred and forty million (140,000,000) people. It has multi ethnicity, with over two hundred and fifty (250) different languages, with English as her official language.
Nigeria was a British colony until 1960, when she gained independence from the British Government. Nigeria, being a former British colony, has been influenced in diverse ways by the British tradition. A very notable influence is in the area of dressing.
Nigeria has various cultural and traditional ways of dressing, which do not cut across the different ethnic groups. The only mode of dressing that is common to all Nigerians is the English way of dressing. This is the first mode of dressing to most Nigerians, especially the educated ones.

As a result of this, western clothes take the largest chunk of expenditure in the Nigerian fashion industry. Nigerians are widely traveled and very exposed, so they have very high and qualitative taste for the English clothes.
Over the years, Nigeria had not developed a very good and competitive method of garment production, especially in the ‘Ready to Wear’ industry. For this reason, a large amount of foreign exchange is expended on importation of ready to wear dresses from all over the world, and little or nothing fashion related is being exported in return. For this reason, the Federal Government banned the importation of ready to wear dresses into the country, with a view to developing the local garment industry and conserving scarce foreign exchange.
The business of garment construction is labour intensive and Nigeria is well endowed with very hard working and energetic citizenry, and a reasonable cost of living. It is for this reason that the nation Nigeria is a country to watch out for in years to come, especially in the fashion industry.
The Vision- The Nigerian Dream
The success of information technology has made the world a global village now. No nation or business can succeed now without the competitive awareness of business situations in other parts of the world. The advent of e-commerce has exposed buyers to products from other parts of the world.
You therefore cannot base your product quality on your local ability alone; there is the need to bring your product quality to the standard that is obtainable in any part of the world.
Garment production is not an exception to this fact. It is for this reason that we had to do a re-engineering of our manufacturing method to meet the world standard.
It is a painful to realize that Garment manufacturing in Nigeria still operates the 18th century method of tailoring handed over to us by the colonial master. This has held back the development of the industry to an international standard and hence the poor performance of the industry. We often believe only the Western world has the exclusive ability to ‘Ready to Wear’ production. Hence, what we wear is often dictated by the western world be it morally good or bad. If Asia could break this jinx, Africa too can and Nigeria in particular can do this.

There is the need for us to have a re-think in this direction and have a paradigm shift. We need to deliberately change the ethos of Garment making to that that is globally acceptable. We have the most important thing that is needed, and that is the human resources. With a bit of proper training, perseverance and belief in ourselves, we can get there. It is certain that we cannot work alone, we need the resources of other Nations but we can always use what we have to get what we need.
The world becoming a global village has lent credence to the fact that no Nation can survive alone. We must learn from others.

A great asset of this Nation is our large population. It was this same asset that brought the Western world to Asia in search of cheaper cost of production, as labour became a competitive advantage for the Asian continent. They took the opportunity of the technology brought into their continent to develop their own technology and they too later became technologically advanced
The search for cheaper cost of production moved from the West to the Eastern Europe. It later moved to Asia and India and the next move is focused on Africa. Nigeria has been designated a forth wave economy.
It is our hope that we will not loose this opportunity to be technically exposed and developed which is every Nigerian’s Dream so as to take our rightful position in the comity of nations.

The Garment manufacturing industry is a labour intensive industry, so we stand to partake in this new move. The question now is how prepared are we as a nation. There is the urgent need for us to emphasize human capacity building in the fashion industry tailored towards this great move. This can only be achieved by doing Garment manufacturing the proper way and that is by following the ‘Critical path’ in garment production, which is the foundation to a successful Garment making.
It is for this reason that proper training of machinists is an integral part of our vision.
In our fashion products development, our focus and preference is for the Nigerian manufacturer that meets the internationally acceptable standard. It is for the purpose of achieving this Nigeria Dream that we have set out on mission.

The Company, Celebrity’s Collections and The Fashion Brand called ‘The Wardrobe'
The success of Celebrity’s Collections in the local fashion business soon led to its being registered as a company on its own in the year 2000. The company later ventured into African wears from other neighbouring West African countries. As a result of this, a staff was deployed to Senegal to train in the African embroidery in 2001.

The company was also into importation of high quality fashion products from different part of the globe while still involved in the local garment production. This exposure challenged its local production to meet the international standard. This led to the training at the London College of Fashion and international mentorship.
Having been trained in the high quality British standard of garment manufacturing and with a wide study of business development and fashion branding, the Company was inspired to bring global excellence into garment production and fashion retailing in Nigeria.
This led to the creation of the fashion brand called www.The Wardrobeng.com
‘The Wardrobe’ was registered as a trade name for Celebrity’s Collections fashion products in 2006.
This is the first of many fashion brands that are being planned for by the Company, as the company intends to promote the Nigerian designers in the nearby future.
