SKILL P: EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH POPULAR PRODUCER SKILL P
The art of music has not only added value to life but it has become a source of joy for everyone around the world, from the beginning of time, different sounds have been brought together to create heart-warming tunes, we have heard severally tunes of note from the likes of great hip hop king Michael Jackson, Melvin gay and lots more, to appreciate music you have to understand how tunes were created to form a beat, then woven with a sensational voice to form the song.
Different tunes such as piano, drums, guitar, and in this new age we talk of auto tuning, which helps those who have good write-up of songs but poor voices to back it up, what many do not understand is that it takes more then one person to from a sensational tune, in music we got script writers, musicians, producers, beat makers.
Our focus today is that industry, which directs the musicians, around the world credit is always given to every person that played a part in creating music to success. But over here in Nigeria, we take this persons for granted not until recently where various producers are mentioned in the songs of the artist and paid handsomely for their impute into the song creation.
Today we can’t talk of music producers in Nigeria without mentioning the likes of sars, mastercraft, unlimited L.A, Don jazzy and several notable others that you know.
It gives me so much pleasure to introduce to you another leader in music production industry; this young man has worked with notable musician in the Nigerian entertainment industry, he is set to take the entertainment world by storm.
He is not new to the entertainment industry, he hails from ogun state, you might not know him as Owoleye Samuel bamidele but if you listen to olamide’s voice of the street, he was behind the production, (mixing and mastering)
How did you get the name skill p: I believe a name should have an effect and meaning in someone’s life, a lot of individuals are born with skills but I believe my in my own skills is prominent and it always stands me out so it brought me skill p.
What do you do for those who don’t know: I am a music producer, and make beats.
When did you start music production: music has been apart of me from childhood, I started playing the piano at the age of 5years old for one of T.R.E.M branches in lagos, from there I ventured into music production.
Apart from the piano do you play any other instrument: I also play drums, bass guitar and guitar, I learnt this instrument just for the fun of it, but now the knowledge is what pays my bills.
When did you start production professional: I started music production 2years ago after graduating through the ranks of music experience in the church.
Who are the major artistes you have collaborated with? I worked with olamide on several tracks with other acts, directed, mixed and mastered (voice of the street) and I also worked with yemi alade, chuddy k, phenom the list is endless, I give God the glory because without him it wont be possible.
Do you manage artiste: no not at all, a lot of artist are asking me to manage them but I want to focus my attention on music production for now.
Can you share your dream for music: for me music is my life, and its always on my mind, for me I wish to take Nigeria music to another level both home and aboard.
What’s your idea of good music: we have different producers, coming up with their ideas, in our business creativity are diverse, been a musician is different from what a producer will add to your production, my idea of good music is wiring several tunes to make an harmonious sound.
What do you feel is the problem of Nigerian music: my view may be subjective but what I think is I would love to see a situation, where noise won’t be classified as songs, we should focus more on classical tunes that can entice the customer, most act also cant do proper stage performance of their songs, all we see is miming, music internationally has gone past this level, I believe people paid to see another angel of the artiste that’s why they came for the show, and when we don’t see that part the show should be classed as a rip off.
Where do you see Nigerian music going from here: I know we can get it right and we will get it right, I see Nigerian music going to live performances without the artist playing back their song at events and I see some artiste trying acapella live on stage.
Do your parents support
Tell us abit about yourself: I hail from ogun state but was brought up in lagos, I am the fourth child of four children, I must say music is just a part of me. From when I was young, if you don’t understand music and don’t have passion for it, it would be hard for you to give your best.
WHAT'S YOUR TAKE ON MUSIC PRODUCTION: music is given life by a lot of factors, my ideology towards life is what I bring into my production, before creativity is given birth to man first has to believe in himself that is to say, no matter what one does it should be done right. To classify your question down to music production, one likes it or not music production's getting beautiful every day. Music production is also more of creativity (whole lot of ideas). And how it comes is through the experience you have had as a producer, I thank God for where am coming from and where I am headed.
WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF 5 YEARS FROM NOW:
5 years from now? I see myself been called nationwide to correct errors in Music. Putting smile on all faces when my name's been heard in hip hop, r n b, jazz, rock, gospel, juju genre and etc (smiles...) God is able.
