THE GRASSHOPPER DAYS

Even with vast land to farm and feed ourselves,
we would not eat proceeds from our own
all because of the uncontrolled greed we had for foreign grains
Inferiority had made the giant of Africa
just an ant, that goes begging for Aid in continental Europe and America.
We became poor even in the midst of rich resources,
we begged for alms as our lives depended on it.

We nurtured our grasshopper mentality like a baby nursed to growth
We nurtured it, till it became part of us
Till it robbed us of almost all our external reserves
We nurtured it till we squandered our wealth, just for our kids to keep tasting the so-called better manufactured "oyinbo" milk and just for our wives to keep wearing the tagged better quality Chinese clothes
We had an inferior instinct toward our own local contents
We believed "oyinbo" things are better, little did we know that we were just patronizing sellers of dumped goods.

But then, he came around declaring war against acts that left our economy stagnant; against the markets that sold harmful goods to our health, and policies that left our labour force unemployed.
He launched us into an era of greater self-esteem,
He stood his ground and was firm with his words

Securing an end to the grasshopper days.
