If he has his way, President Obama wants new legislation to
be passed by Congress that will require companies to inform their customers
within thirty days if they have been hacked.
The measure aims at trying to prevent companies from
misusing or selling personal student data to third parties and to prevent
misuse of personal information collected in school for targeted marketing at
any point of time. Legislation Seeks To Prevent Misuse of Customer Information
Recent hacking incidents and breaches of security at many
companies have exposed the lack of any uniform practice in alerting customers
if any security breach takes place. If it is passed by Congress, this proposed
Personal Data Notification and Protection Act will require companies in the US
to inform their customers about the breach within thirty days of being
compromised. It will also seek to make it illegal to see the details and
identities of customers overseas.
It would be a great thing if the Nigerian president can
formulate such law in Nigeria. Protection of lives and property should be the
number one priority.
