It was
lights, camera, action in Washington over the weekend. A slew of
superstars were on hand for the 7th annual BET Honors taping — an awards show
that recognizes luminaries from the entertainment, education and business
worlds, like 2015 honorees rapper-producer Kanye West, actress Phylicia Rashad,
singer Usher, Microsoft chairman and Virtual Instruments CEO
John W. Thompson and National Museum of African Artdirector
Johnnetta Betsch Cole.
Other VIPs selfied, cheered on their sports teams and sampled some afternoon coffee.
Let’s revisit their weekend fun:
Friday afternoon, culinary masters Alice Waters and Joan Nathan (that’s chef José Andrés in the middle) kicked off “Sips and Suppers,” a foodie event that benefits Martha’s Vineyard and D.C. Central Kitchen.
Kimye and Ne-Yo hit the BET Honors while Obama sips coffee in India: Which VIP had the best weekend?
Wizards player Kevin Seraphin dishes up the usual social media gem: a selfie with a rather shocked Marcin Gortat. The Wizards arrived in Portland, Ore., midday Friday in advance of their Saturday night game, a losing contest against the Trail Blazers.
Sen. Heidi Heitkamp (D-N.D.) returned to her alma mater, the University of North Dakota, to cheer on the hockey team Friday night.
Kimye (that’s Kanye West and wife Kim Kardashian) touched down in Dulles on Saturday, ahead of the BET Honors held that evening at the Warner Theatre. West was tapped to receive the “Visionary Award.”
The power couple traded their winter layers for a matching, sleek black-on-black look on the BET Honors red carpet. West and Kardashian shared flashbulb-time with Debra Lee, chairman and CEO of BET.
R&B superstar Ne-Yo was in town for some radio appearances and the BET Honors. He posed with Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Stacy Barthe, both casual in black (the color of choice for the night?), on the red carpet. Classically trained hip-hop violinist Miri Ben-Ari charmed the BET Honors audience with her musical talents.
The awards show, which is set to air Feb. 23 on BET, also allowed time for an icon like Phylicia Rashad to offer some guidance to up-and-coming R&B singer K. Michelle. We’re sure Rashad, “everyone’s favorite mother” on “The Cosby Show,” who was among the five honorees at the BET Honors (she received the “Theatrical Arts Award”), delivered some good advice.
