CAF Approaches Ghana To Host Next Year's Tournament
Following the withdrawal of Morocco from hosting the 2015 African Cup of Nations tournament next year, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has approached Ghana to host the bi-ennial competition
According to AllSports.com.gh, Ghana's minister of Youth and Sports, confirmed that the African football body appealed to the government of Ghana through the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to step in as host of the tournament after Morocco pulled out due to the scare of Ebola.
A primary budget discussion has already being held between the Ghana Football Association and the Sports Ministry with an initial estimate of around $12million.
The report also confirmed that GFA is favourable to the offer and is already in consultation with the country's government to discuss the viability of hosting the 16 team tournament in a short period of barely four months to the kick-off.
Ghana's biggest challenge if it will host the tournment would be the short time that is provided for the rehabilitation of its infrastructures.
Also it will face a big problem in convinving the Ghanaian public on the safety of hosting the tournament with the spread of the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) which has ravaged parts of West Africa with neighbours; Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea, being the worst hit by the disease.
CAF also appraoched the South Africa Football Association(SAFA) but the 2013 AFCON host are yet to give an affirmative feedback to the request.
Ghan already put in a bid to host the AFCON in 2017 following the withdrawal of Libya over the current political instability and fighting that have hit it, since the Arabian revolution: Ghana's government may have to drop the 2017 bid if it accepts to host next year's tournament.
